How to play an ESL board game in a Zoom lesson

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

Just because your English class has gone online, it doesn't mean you can't use the fun resources you would if you were in the classroom. With some minor adaptations you can still play board games and keep your students happy!

board game on zoom

Here's how:

1. Sharing the board:

  • Open a PDF gameboard for the game you want to play on your desktop. With Zoom open and your Zoom meeting already started, click the Share Screen button on the black bar at the bottom of the window.

  • Select the board game PDF file from the options and click share.

  • Your students can now see the board. You can zoom in and out on the game, move it around and even draw on top of it with the annotate option and the draw tool. Your students can also annotate the board. (Unless you turn this setting off.)

2. For a small group of up to 6 players, keep everyone in the same meeting. For larger groups, divide them into breakout rooms to play. You'll need to send one student in each break out room the gameboard PDF by email so that they can share their screen within their group. You won't be able to share your screen with all the rooms.

3. Assign each student in the group a different colour. Ask them to use the annotate option and the draw tool to draw a shape on the start space using their colour. This is their counter.

The students can use a real die if they have one at home, or open a new browser window and use a website like this one: https://rolladie.net/

4. Start the game as usual. Students roll their real or virtual die and move around the board, marking their position by erasing their counter and drawing it again wherever they "land".

It might take a bit longer than usual to get started but persevere! Once you and your students have got the hang of it, the next time will be a breeze!

Have a go using one of our board games, for a limited time this one is free!

Don't forget to use the code FreeBoardGame when you check out.

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour.
