The Emoji Game

Updated: May 4, 2020

This is a lively and versatile game to add a bit of excitement to quizzes or reviews in class. We find it useful for reviewing work before the end of term exam. You can change the emojis if you like, ask your students what their favourite ones are!

The emoji game for ESL classes

1. Before class draw yourself a key on a piece of paper: Draw a grid, e.g. 6 x 6 squares and draw a different emoji in each square. You can use the ones above or choose your own. Keep the grid secret from your students.

2. In class divide your students into teams. Draw the same sized grid on the board but without any emojis. At the side of the grid draw each emoji and what it means. Ask each team a question in turn, about any topic that you want to test them on. If the team answers your question correctly they can choose a square on the grid to 'reveal'. For example if they say D2, look at your key and draw the emoji you have in D2 on your grid. The team then wins or loses points, depending on which emoji they have revealed.

Our example emojis mean:

  • Lightning - win 20 points

  • Bomb - lose 10 points

  • Smiley face - win 5 points

  • Sad face - lose 5 points

  • Skull and crossbones - Steal 10 points from another team

  • Angel - win 10 points

3. Continue playing for as long as you like. The winning team is the one with the most points at the end.

*Tips* If you want to avoid minus scores and disappointed students, put more winning than losing emojis on your grid. Remember that your students can't see your key so if you need to adjust the emojis a bit to keep it a close race you can! Shhh!
