Describe and Draw

Updated: May 23, 2020

This is a versatile game that can be used to introduce a topic, elicit vocabulary or practise describing images for speaking exams. It's great for making students concentrate on communicating clearly and listening carefully.

Describe and Draw ESL activity EFL game
  1. Divide your students into pairs. One is the Describer, the other is the Drawer.

  2. Give each Describer a photograph of your choice, they shouldn't let anyone see it. Each Drawer needs a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.

  3. The Describers must describe their images in as much detail as possible. The Drawers must draw based on what they are told, trying to get their drawing as similar as possible to the photograph. Set a time limit!

  4. When the task is over the students compare the photo and the drawing to see how similar (or not!) they are. The pair with the 2 closest images wins. If you like, swap roles and repeat with a new image for each pair.

  5. Get feedback and highlight any important vocabulary.
